Publications Program

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies, in close cooperation with the University of Texas Press, publishes three series of scholarly and literary works on subjects concerning the Middle East. The authors are English-speaking academics and translated experts from the area and the relevant cultures. All works are chosen under a rigorous review process conducted by the Center's Publications Committee, and marketed and distributed by the University of Texas Press. The editor for the Center's Publications Program is Annes McCann-Baker. The three series are:

  • THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST SERIES, which focuses on scholarly works of high merit devoted to contemporary developments in the Middle East and North Africa. Nineteen books by Western and Middle Eastern social scientists have been published and widely reviewed in this series over the last 17 years. The Center acquires manuscripts for this series, which is published under the imprint of the University of Texas Press. The series editor is Robert A. Fernea.
  • THE MIDDLE EAST MONOGRAPH SERIES, which presents short works of a specialized nature geared toward social and literary studies. Eleven books have been published in this series under the imprint of the Center. The series editor is Robert A. Fernea.
  • THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST LITERATURES IN TRANSLATION SERIES, which is devoted to the publication of significant works of fiction, criticism, and memoirs translated into English from Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish. Nineteen works have been published in this series under the imprints of the Center and the University of Texas Press. The series editor is Annes McCann-Baker.
In 1995, the Center and the Press have begun a project to mount works from the three series on the Center's World Wide Web site. THE MIDDLE EAST ELECTRONIC PROJECT will mount on the World Wide Web monographs resulting from new and valuable research pertaining to the area. The pilot project of this series, online now, is the full-length publication ofIstanbul Boy, Part I , the beginning of the memoirs of deceased Turkish humorist Aziz Nesin. Although the Center has chosen an out-of-print title from its translation series for the trial run in this distribution medium, the future titles to be mounted at this site will be new works in the Modern Middle East Series.
