Middle East Slide Packets

Originally published by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies in the mid-1980s, this collection of slide and text packets has long been out of print. For the first time, we are able to make this material available on the Internet.

The original slide presentations have been laid out in Macromedia Flash (requires Flash Player 6 or higher, which can be downloaded here). In addition, you can download a stand-alone version of each presentation (for Windows and Macintosh) to use in classrooms. Download the file to your computer's desktop, double-click on the file, and you're off!

Supplemental articles and scripts for the slide presentations are available to download as PDF files (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded here).

The Middle Eastern Family This unit describes traditional family life in the Middle East. Articles that accompany the unit include discussions of traditional family structure, child-rearing practices, and an article about the kibbutz, a unique social environment that played an important role in the history of Israel.

Middle Eastern Food: Production and Distribution This unit discusses food production in the Middle East, both in terms of the traditional methods and technological innovations used to improve and expand the region's ability to feed itself. Articles that accompany the unit include a discussion of the region's geography and climate, and new innovations in technology that allow agriculture in the desert. Additional articles describe a traditional village feast at the end of Ramadan, the rituals of making coffee, and easy-to-make recipes for traditional foods.

Future units to be posted include:

  • Middle Eastern Cities Past and Present
  • Middle Eastern Holidays
  • Middle Eastern Villages
