The Cyprus Conflict
Author: Christopher Rose, Outreach Coordinator, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, The University of Texas at Austin
Synopsis: This Flash-based unit presents the history of the current division of Cyprus from the beginning of the Ottoman era to the present day. Primary source documents are utilized to add to the narrative. Comprehension questions, maps, a glossary of terms, and standards alignment are provided.
Recommended Grade Levels: High school, post-secondary

Epic Proportions: Teaching through Timeless Tales
Author: Kathleen Blakeslee Pferd, Mark Twain Elementary School, Houston, Texas
Synopsis: This project examines the mythology, history and geography of the ancient world through epics. An epic provides content in which to teach and improve trans-disciplinary skills. Myths, legends and tales add additional information to explore various cultures throughout time. Includes downloadable charts for classroom use and assessment policies.
Recommended Grade Levels: Elementary, middle

The Trojan War: Prototype to Modern Times
Author: Ann Till, Rowland Hall-St. Mark's Middle School, Salt Lake City, Utah
Synopsis: This unit focuses on the immortal story of the Trojan War and its relevance in today's world. Students will become acquainted with this famous story and its origins, its author, and its archaeology. They will also learn to draw parallels and lessons from the story and to apply them to current events.
Recommended Grade Levels: High school, post-secondary

Turkish and Cypriot Folktales: An Internet Webquest
Author: Gladys Fox, Showalter Middle School, Tukwila, Washington
Synopsis: Working with a partner, students are presented with the task of analyzing either Turkey's or Cyprus' cultural history and folktales. Instead of having both students work on all parts of the task, each becomes an expert on a different part. Based upon what students learn about the cultural history of Cyprus or Turkey, they will determine how culture is reflected in folktales.
Recommended Grade Levels: Middle

Çatal Höyük - City at the Center of the Ancient World
Author: Barbara McManus, Paris Gibson Middle School, Great Falls, Montana
Synopsis: A slide-based unit that presents the Neolithic culture of Çatal Höyük, describing its history, culture, and the craftsmanship of the people who lived there. Includes vocabulary, maps, resources.
Recommended Grade Levels: Middle
Requirements: Macromedia Flash Player 6 or higher

Life in the Byzantine Empire vs. Life in Europe During the Middle Ages
Author: Beth Shevitz, Newport Mill Middle School, Kensington, Maryland
Synopsis: This unit on life in the Byzantine Empire follows a unit on life in Europe during the Middle Ages.  In this unit, the students work in pairs to summarize the information presented on illustrated placards that discuss 10 aspects of life in the Byzantine Empire. Students then write a “brief constructed response” or “BCR” that answers the question, “how was life in the Byzantine Empire similar to and different from life in Europe during the Middle Ages?

Iznik Ceramics: Making a Ceramic Tile
Author: Laura Barker, Renner Middle School, Plano, Texas
Synopsis: During this unit, students will be involved in the examination of selected aspects of Turkish culture and history, with particular attention given to Iznik ceramics. Each student will examine and create and Iznik inspired design to apply to a 6” x 6” ceramic tile.  The teacher w ill guide the students through the process emphasizing traditional techniques.

Turkey and Cyprus: East Meets West

Synopsis: An introductory presentation introducing Turkey and Cyprus, two Mediterranean nations with a distinctive history and culture. This presentation covers history from the Greco-Roman period through to current efforts to resolve the situation on Cyprus.
